 What is GPSTrails.net all about?

I have created this site to share the GPX files I create with those who enjoy hiking and use a GPS as part of their navigation.  Please feel free to send suggestions.  A lot of work goes into this project and I want it to be as useful to it's users as possible.

Are  the downloads free? Can anyone download the files?
The downloads are free.

What format are the downloadable GPS files?
The files are saved in GPX format before being "zipped" into a downloadable package.  GPX is a widely accepted standardized format for use in sharing navigation data between software of various manufacturers.  For more information about the GPX format visit Topografix.

How can I view, modify, or load the files I have downloaded into my GPS?
The software you normally use with your GPS will likely allow you to import GPX files into it.  If not, or if you are missing your software, give EasyGPS a try.  This basic version is free and works well.  You can also purchase a customized version, ExpertGPS that allow you to use map downloads, scans and advanced features.  You could also use GPS Babel to convert the file format to your software's standard file format.

Can the individual download files be combined to create a larger custom route(s)?
Yes.  I make every effort to use unique prefixes for the route waypoints so the files do not conflict when more than one GPX file is imported.  I am not sure if importing multiple files will work with all software but I have tried it using EasyGPS.

How are the trails named?
Trail are named differently from map to map depending on who published the map.  The trail routes posted here are named according to the trail name found on the appropriate USGS Quad Topo.  If the route is un-named on the quad I use a nearby landmark (such as a canyon) to create a trail name.
